He then decided not to re-sign to Chess and went on to become an independent song-writer, arranger and conductor, and was musical director / writer for Minnie Riperton, Johnny Nash, Curtis Mayfield and Marvin Gaye

''Respect''

Review by Jason Ankeny (AMG):
After splitting with longtime backing combo the Organ-Izers, Odell Brown teamed with arranger Gene Barge to craft this fitting tribute to fallen soul icon Otis Redding. The all-instrumental set implicitly celebrates Redding the songwriter, not the singer, and Barge's thoughtful large-group charts make sure the music's transition from Memphis R&B to Chicago soul-jazz goes off without a hitch. While Brown delivers some of his funkiest, most inspired Hammond solos on cuts like "Hard to Handle" and "Respect," the overall mood here is more somber than on previous outings -- it's clear Redding's tragic death affected him greatly, and the album channels that grief to create something truly heartfelt.

soul searchers salt of the earth back

''Ashley's Roachclip''

Reviews:
The second Soul Searchers LP expands the band's music into deep and dark new dimensions. While boasting an even funkier street-smart approach than the previous We the People, Salt of the Earth achieves new levels of jazz-inspired sophistication as well. The much-sampled "Ashley's Roachclip" and "I Rolled It, You Hold It" are brilliant evocations of mind-warping psychedelia, but the group also slows down and gets straight with a shimmering reading of the classic Bacharach/David love song "Close to You." Between those two extremes lurk angular yet soulful grooves with all the widescreen power of contemporaries like Earth, Wind & Fire and Kool & the Gang, but with a structural complexity all their own.
By Jason Ankeny (AMG)

This album wins because of professionalism: you can tell by listening how tightly produced it was. The horn section is super-tight & clean-sounding, and it is such a tickle to hear all those beats & samples you grew up with in hip-hop played in their natural original state. total win, worth every frikkin' penny.
This is extremely well rounded funk. Here, the Soul Searchers blend jazz funk with soft soul.
Though not quite as musically complex as Amnesty of LA Sound Carnival, this music does have interesting progressions that make the songs uniuqe, but these could still work on 1970s AM radio.
"Ain't It Heavy" could be a Spinners track, except that the chords twist and turn far more than on Gamble and Huff work, and the singers work around these changes, almost like jazz cats. Like a lot of this, it's very chromatic, working up and down all the sharps and flats of the scale rather than just the tonics.
There is a rendition of the Carpender's "Close To You." Well done, but considering the rest of the sophistocation of the rest of the music, it does not need to be here.
Still, you can't go wrong with this.
From Amazon

Another Funk classic from the revered Sussex label released by the good brothers Pragnell at Soul Brother! By 1974 the band had seriously developed their brass section and had honed a definitely more horny funk sound. Again, there are 5 tracks on here I adore. The one that really floors me is the old sampler's favourite. And, to be fair, what good taste they have too. The oddly titled “Ashley's Roach Clip” (no, me neither!) has featured on many a rap classic – even some I liked back in the day! Remember classics such as Eric B & Rakim's “Paid In Full”, LL Cool J's excellent “Jack The Ripper” and PM Dawn's “Set Adrift On Memory Bliss”. Along with Funky Drummer that has to be one of the meanest and baddest drum loops EVER!
A big song on the two-step scene is the mellow cover of Bacharach & David's “Close To You”. This is not my cup of tea, but I know many will really want this track. “Blow Your Whistle” is a mean groove and does cut the mustard for me, and is one you can really get into!
“Ain't It Funky” sure is a funky outing and “Funk To The Folks” develops into a very tuneful and soulful effort – it really is a great track from a great album. Over 30 years old, this does not sound dated or passé whatsoever, and to me that is the calling card of quality writing, production and musicianship. “Windsong” makes up my quintet of funky classics here. If listened to amongst today's releases it really does offer a genuine breath of fresh air. Both releases are worth picking up. Not a CD to overlook.

We The People back

''Think''

Reviews:
One the all time great funky albums of the 70s – a mad little record with a sense of rhythm and timing that was years ahead of its time! The Soul Searchers (along with Chuck Brown) later became known for their heavy-hitting Go Go work at the end of the decade – but here, they're a really free-thinking outfit with a lot of jazz in their funk – and a willingness to change up the beats and timings in ways that push the record miles ahead from an average funk outing. Tracks swirl around with an amazing intensity – supported by guitar work from Brown, organ from Hilton Felton, and some really great horns from Don Tillery and Lloyd Pinchback. The album features a wonderful remake of "Think" – plus the great originals "1993", "Soul To The People", "Blowout", and "We The People".
© 1996-2014, Dusty Groove America, Inc.

This Washington, D.C.-based group had two singles from this album featured on the Billboard R&B charts: "We the People" and "Think." The former is an aggressively-paced number with a social message for the times; it features an instrumental vamp. It peaked at 40 after only six weeks on the charts. The second single was "Think." Penned by James Brown, it features his distinctive horn arrangement. It, too, has that upbeat rhythm. It peaked at 43 inside five weeks. The two ballads on this album are "When Will My Eyes See" and "Your Love Is so Good," and both contrast each other. The former is pop-oriented and the latter is soulful. The remaining tracks are in the vein of the two released singles. All are seasoned with the thick, gritty sound of the early '70s.
By Craig Lytle (AMG)

We The People LP label 1

''Blowout''

About the re-issue item:
This is the first time EVER that this album has been released on CD. This recording from 1972 is the one that put the indefatigable Chuck Brown on the musical map. At this point they were a 9 piece band with full orchestration, percussion and organ and more than gave Kool & The Gang, War, Fatback and Mandrill a run for their money! This album is known for two reasons: firstly it is excellent and essential and secondly it is widely known by those who are into their breakbeats and samples. If you're into that sort of thing, that is. I cannot recommend this album highly enough. It grabs you by the musical throat and shakes the soul into action. It's funky, fired up and fierce. Chuck takes no prisoners and totally captivates us like nothing else.
If only there was material around like this today. AND I don't mean the cheap and nasty British Acid Jazz copycat artists either. There is no comparison. Please forget buying the latest British hype out of London and check out the Soul Searchers. They are, of course, the definitive article and your money and time are better served there. There are some ballads – as such – on here, but I fear they simply don't appeal to me. I think that the funk is best served up here and the harder the better.
Out of the 8 tracks on here there are no less than 5 that really get my old toes tapping and butt moving. The title song is a gust of pure wah wah funk and blasting horns. Such a strong cut to start off the album... it really kicks backside and doesn't slow down. The positive, socially conscious message bodes well, as does the fantastic version of Lyn Collins' “Think”. This lives up to the work of the J.B.s surprisingly well.
Talking of the J.B.'s and all things funky drummer, “1993” satisfies those who like that sort of rhythm. An odd track, and why “1993”? Bet they never foresaw the degradation of R&B from Rhythm and Blues to Rubbish and Bland! Anyway, enough of my ranting. Should War or The Wild Magnolias be your bag then the jazzy “It's All In Your Mind” will definitely be up your street. The tambourine shakes, the funky guitar licks and the vocals are so funky they are FONKY! LOL.
My final choice is the instrumental cut “Blowout” which is very much in the Kool & The Gang mode a la “Peace And Understanding” era. A great track to cap off a great album. It sounds fantastic too. Soul Brother deliver the goods again!

We The People 7 single

''We The People'' 7''
(Part 1)

Incredibly this is the first CD or Vinyl reissue of this fantastic Funk album from 1972.
This is the record that put (Chuck Brown and the) Soul Searchers on the map, and is one of the all time great Funk albums, and was the very first Funk album that I purchased, back in the day.
At this point they were an eight piece band with a full horn section, organ and percussion, and were considered along with The JB’s, Kool and the Gang, War, Fatback Band and Mandrill to be amongst the leading funk bands of their time. The band has continued for well over three and a half decades and are still performing with some of the original members, having become the leading Washington Go-Go band in the 80’s, influencing groups like Trouble Funk, and Little Benny and The Masters who followed.
Chuck Brown had begun his musical career in the early 60’s playing guitar with Jerry Butler and The Earls of Rhythm, joining Los Latinos in 1965 that enthralled him with their syncopated backbeat. The Soul Searchers recorded two great albums for Sussex in the early 70’s this one and the follow up ‘Salt of the Earth’ from 1974. After a one-off single on Polydor ‘Boogie Up The Nation’ in 1975, they re appeared as Chuck Brown and The Soul Searchers and had a gold album and US No1 single hit with ‘Bustin Loose’ on the Source label. Chuck is widely recognised as having created the ‘Go-Go’ sound combining Latin Beats, African Call and Chant and American Jazz, which has become the sound of Washington DC. He says that ‘Disco was too fast people didn’t want to get all sweaty, they just sat down, so we cut the beat in half and called this new sound ‘Go-Go’ because it never stops’. Chuck and the Soul Searchers have recorded many albums since 1980 and had a string of Go-Go hits including ‘Go-Go Swing’, ‘We Need Some Money’, ‘Back It On Up’ and has toured the world many times with his great live show.
This album contains funk floor fillers like the title track, ‘Soul To The People’ , ‘1993’ and the great instrumental version of Lyn Collins’ Think’ , the driving groove of ‘It’s All In Your Mind’ and the jazzier funk of ‘Blowout’.
This album has also contributed to many Hip Hop and Soul samples, most notably ‘Think’ by GANGSTAR on ‘Take A rest (remix)’, HERBALISER, and CPO, ‘1993’ by ERIC B and RAKIM and KINDRED, making it also in demand by hip hop sample collectors.
The album has been heavily in demand and hard to find for the past 20 years, with original vinyl copies easily commanding and deserving a £50 price tag. Hopefully this release will enable a new and wider audience to enjoy the raw sound of the Soul Searchers. Soul To The People!!
