Jazz Soul: Houston Person's Goodness!

houston person goodness front
Houston Person

”Goodness!”
( LP Prestige Records, 1969 )
Catalog # PR 10027
Reissue of Prestige PR 7678

Record Presentations:
This is the first album of Person's that was a real hit. Here is one of the best examples of his late-'60s/early-'70s style. Small organ combo with that funky sound. Perhaps too formulaic, but still nice. Includes the hypnotic tune "Jamilah." (Michael Erlewine)

Although none of the five LPs Houston Person recorded for Prestige prior to Goodness! had come close to being a hit, Bob Weinstock stuck with him, believing that the natural soulfulness in Person's playing would eventually find an audience. Goodness! turned out to be a smash hit, vindicating Weinstock's judgment and launching Person as an international star.
Person came out of the organ group tradition and for many years utilized that sound for his own bands. This hugely successful album perhaps best exemplifies his Sixties/early Seventies style.
With Sonny Phillips, Billy Butler, Bob Bushnell, Frankie Jones, Buddy Caldwell.

''Hey Driver!''

Reviews:
A great little record — one of Houston’s most successful for Prestige! The album follows strongly in that late 60s pre-funk mode that Prestige was cooking up — tight and groovy, with electric bass dropped into the mix, electrifying things a bit, but still really just grooving in a souped-up 60s soul jazz mode. Houston rises to the style wonderfully — and the rest of the group include Sonny Phillips on organ, Billy Butler on guitar, and Buddy Caldwell who throws in some great conga work! Includes a nice boogaloo cut called “Hey Driver!”, with some chanted vocals by the band, plus the tracks “Hard Times” and “Jamilah”, which have a very nice groove!

Tenor saxophonist Houston Person was still a relatively new name at the time he recorded this set, his sixth session for Prestige. The funky music (which includes the hit title song) emphasizes boogaloos, danceable rhythms and repetitious vamps set down by the rhythm section (organist Sonny Phillips, guitarist Billy Butler, electric bassist Bob Bushnell, drummer Frankie Jones and Buddy Caldwell on congas), but it is primarily Person's passionate tenor solos that will come the closest to holding on to the attention of jazz listeners. The music is generally quite commercial and is certainly not recommended to bebop purists, although it has some strong moments. But overall these performances succeed more as background music than as creative jazz. By Scott Yanow (AMG).

About Mr. Person:
Ever since he recorded his first album as a leader, Underground Soul, for Prestige Records in 1966, big-tones tenor saxophonist Houston Person has been a standard-bearer of so-called soul jazz. His thoughtfully chosen repertoire of blues and ballads, popular and r&b standards, and compositions by fellow jazz instrumentalists aims to please the public and has helped keep Person in steady work, in clubs and concerts and on records.

Person_Huston

Born in Florence, South Carolina in 1934, Person played piano before taking up tenor saxophone at age 17. After Army duty in Germany, where he played with such musicians as Don Ellis, Eddie Harris, and Cedar Walton, he studied at Hartt College of Music in Hartford, Connecticut. Person made his recording debut in 1965 on a Prestige album by organist Johnny “Hammond” Smith and, after forming his own band in the early Seventies, continued featuring organ players. In 1986, the saxophonist stopped using organists on the road and hired pianist Stan Hope, who’s been with him ever since.
Person, whose influences include Gene Ammons, Illinois Jacquet, Harold Land, Hank Mobley, and Sonny Stitt, has for many years booked his own gigs and produced his own records. Veteran jazz singer Etta Jones, best known for her 1960 hit “Don’t Go to Strangers” on Prestige, was the featured vocalist with Person’s combo from 1973 until her death in 2001. He produced numerous albums by Jones for the Muse and High Note labels, as well as discs for Ernie Andrews, Charles Brown Joey DeFrancesco, Charles Earland, Red Holloway, David “Fathead” Newman, Richard Wyands, and others.

Captain Sky - Pop Goes The Captain bk

Review:
The poor man's Bootsy Collins, Captain Sky channels the sprawling cosmic-funk consciousness of Parliament-Funkadelic to create a slicker, more commercial version of their pioneering sound. His sophomore LP, Pop Goes the Captain, is like a paint-by-numbers copy of a George Clinton production, mirroring the maestro's deep grooves, far-out lyrics, and extraterrestrial arrangements but boasting none of the gonzo creativity that makes P-Funk so sublime. The album even fails to maintain the energy level established on the previous The Adventures of Captain Sky, settling instead for tepid ballads and syrupy slow jams. He may be a captain, but the only way he's getting a ride on the P-Funk mothership is by stowing away in the cargo hold.
By Jason Ankeny (AMG)

captain sky ad

Biography:
Daryl L. Cameron (born July 10, 1957, Chicago, Illinois), better known as Captain Sky, is an American musician and singer. Captain Sky’s funk-based musical style, futuristic costumes, and psychedelic imagery are similar to those of George Clinton, Bootsy Collins, and other Parliament/Funkadelic projects. In the liner notes to the first Captain Sky album, Captain Sky’s origins are explained in this way: “Oh, by the way, if you’re wondering, Daryl Cameron somehow entered the phonebooth of his mind and emerged as Captain Sky. Tune in again.”
With a group of other Chicago-based musicians, Captain Sky began recording around 1978 and released The Adventures of Captain Sky in that year followed quickly by Pop Goes The Captain in 1979. Both albums were released by AVI Records. Several singles were released from these albums, most notably “Wonder Worm” and “Super Sporm.” By 1980, Captain Sky had moved to TEC records and on that imprint released his third album Concerned Party #1. After several more singles, The Return of Captain Sky, his final album was released in 1981 back on AVI records. Since that time, Captain Sky has released singles sporadically on various labels and older tracks have been included on various compilations.

Vincent Montana Jr. & The Philly Sound Orchestra - That’s What Love Does 12''

VincentMontanaJr-ThatsWhatLoveDoes

Vincent Montana Jr.
& The Philly Sound Orchestra
''That’s What Love Does'' 12''
FEATURING WILLIAM “SMOKE” HOWARD / MAXI-SINGLE (2006)

Note:
Is recommended to anyone who has never heard it but has even the slightest interest in the sound of 70's classic Philly Soul. Track #2, The original version of the song, Is a perfect example of Vincent Montana Jr’s expertise for the intricate crafting and production responsible for the lush background environment in many Philly classics by artists such as M.F.S.B, The Salsoul Orchestra, The Philly Sound Orchestra, The Montana Sextet and many others. The vocals are provided by William “Smoke” Howard whom was with Philadelphia International Records 70's group”The Ebonys“. Smoke’s vocals blend perfectly alongside the instrumentation with Montana on vibes which are crystal clear and right up out front of the track. Great mastering of a great tune long with remixes including an instrumental version & vibe solo.

Tracklisting:
1 – That’s What Love Does (Louis Benedetti’s Club Vox)
2 – That’s What Love Does (Vincent Montana, Jr. Original Mix)
3 – That’s What Love Does (Louis Benedetti’s Classic Dub)
4 – That’s What Love Does (Louis Benedetti’s Reprise Dub)
5 – That’s What Love Does (Vibeapella)
6 – That’s What Love Does (Vincent Montana, Jr. Instrumental)
7 – That’s What Love Does (Louis Benedetti’s Radio Edit)

Short comment:
William Howard, known as "SMOKE", a veteran performer, is a soulful entertainment messenger of "Life & Love". A native of Bristol, TN, "Smoke" formed the group "The Fabulous Nu-Tones" while in college and wrote and recorded their first release, "Our Love Was Destined To Be" / "I'm Not Worthy", on Vinyl while attending Tennessee State University. After college, his singing career took off when he led and managed a number of East Coast bands including South Jersey's "Black Smoke". Then, in the mid-1990s, "Smoke", as lead singer of The Ebonys, brought new life to the sound of Philadelphia with his rugged and powerful voice- slammin' the 90s with a dose of the great hits that made The Ebonys famous. His list of accomplishments also includes featured vocalist on "That's What Love Does" written and produced by Vincent Montana, Jr.; lead vocalist on Asphalt Jungle's Billboard charted single "Freakin' Time"; first class performer having shared the stage with such greats as Al Green, Harold Melvin & The Blue Notes, Billy Paul, Chi-lites, Delfonics, Heatwave, Intruders, Ohio Players, Stylistics, Blue Magic etc; and now, solo recording artist.
Making his first trip to North Wales in the United Kingdom in October of 2009, "Smoke" did an impromptu performance of "That's What Love Does", a song that is well known on the UK dance scene. He returned to North Wales to do an encore performance in March, 2010, less than six months after his first performance.
"Smoke" resides in the Philadelphia area and continues to be active in keeping the sound of Philadelphia alive. He has completed his second solo CD entitled Give Me Your Heart.
Whether it be a funky, mid-tempo groove, a hip-hop inspired cut, or a heartfelt ballad, "Smoke" delivers, as only "Smoke" can, Smokin' Sounds With A Message You Can Dance To!!!

Roberta Flack Featuring Donny Hathaway covrec

''Back Together Again''

Reviews:
This was intended to be Roberta's second full fledged collaboration with Donny Hathaway but as we all know, Donny committed suicide before the recording was finished, so we'd never know what the final product might have been had the album been completed. Nevertheless, what we eventually got from the sessions were 7 tracks featuring Donny's vocals on only 2 of them. On 2 tracks, the songs ran back to back for nearly 18 minutes long, so Atlantic must have been pretty desperate to drag out the half complete sessions into a full length album. How else to explain an interminable 9-minute plus take of "Back Together Again" when a 4 to 5 minute version would have done the job ? That aside, the good news is that the quality of this, Roberta's disco album, is remarkably even. Roberta's and Donny's voices blend beautifully on their hit duet, "You Are My Heaven". For those who think Roberta doesn't ever let rip, just listen to the last 15 seconds before the fade out. For a fleeting moment, I thought I was hearing Aretha ! The other stand out but curiously ignored track is Gwen Guthrie's "God Don't Like Ugly". Here, Roberta gets into an unusually funky groove with excellent phrasing and some of her most soulful singing. The two non-disco ballads on the album, "Disguises" and "Stay With Me", also hold their own. "Disguises" is particularly poignant and moving. So, "Roberta Flack featuring Donny Hathaway" isn't quite what its title professes. She flirted with disco but avoided its excesses and worst influences. This album is clearly one of Roberta's better late 70s/early 80s efforts since abandoning the persona of virtuoso performer for that of classy MOR artiste.
From Amazon

The combination of Donny Hathaway and Roberta Flack undeniably ranks atop the all-time great duet parings in the history of R&B. Any opportunity to have one guest on the other's recordings brought out a sensual energy not to be denied, similar to the magnetic duets between Tammi Terrell and Marvin Gaye for Motown during the '60s. This seven-song session didn't yield any timeless classics à la "The Closer I Get to You," but Flack's distinct and beautiful voice brings a level of class to this outing that few of her contemporaries were able to achieve. Two Stevie Wonder-penned compositions, "You Are My Heaven" and "Don't Make Me Wait Too Long," bring Wonder's unique arrangements together and give this album a more uptempo feel than most of the prior work of Flack and Hathaway, both as solo artists and as a team. Near the end, the album's climatic piece, "Back Together Again," helps to conclude the album on an upbeat note before breaking it down again into a soft, gentle finale of calm, familiar waters. The realization that these tracks are some of the final recordings Hathaway would appear on before his tragic death brings an element of melancholy to the listening experience.

Info: Synth Presents...Al Kent

synthmixes-synth-presents-al-kent

"It’s hard to really put into words how much we love this mix. Al says that he finds it difficult to replicate how he sounds in a club, but for us this mix is so much more than just a tribute to the dancefloor. From the scintillating groove of his own productions ‘Gee Wiz’ and ‘Colder Than Cold’ to the feel-good flavour of Free Life and Jeanne Napoli, this will soundtrack your entire summer. Stick it on when you’re getting hot and heavy, give it a spin when you’re lying out in the sun or roll it out on the bus to work, it doesn’t matter where you play it, you won’t be able to stop yourself from smiling…"
