Gary Byrd

''Presenting The Gary Byrd Experience''

( LP RCA Victor, 1972 )
Catalog # LSP-4657

Gary Byrd was a famous NYC DJ on WWRL. His name might be familiar to some since a 45 of his was used in the Brainfreeze mix by DJ Shadow and Cut Chemist. This is a 9 song LP of some pretty funky music backing Gary Byrd talking about society, politics, culture and love.
New York DJ Gary Byrd impacted the community beyond providing a socially conscious viewpoint in his programming choices. He also stepped up to the plate and recorded songs that affirmed black identity. He formed a friendship with Stevie Wonder, receiving writing credits for "Black Man" and "Village Ghetto Land" on Wonder's Songs In The Key Of Life. In 1983 he recorded the proto-rap "The Crown," which had black history as its theme.

 Gary Byrd Experience-back

Review:
Having been a close collaborator with Stevie Wonder for years, 1972's Gary Byrd Experience represents the talented musician's opportunity to step into the spotlight with his own group. Best known as a DJ working at New York station WWRL, Byrd's relationship with Wonder began in the '60s and continued through Wonder's prolific years in the next decade, when he helped co-write “Black Man” and “Ghetto Village Land.” Stepping out on his own with this album, Byrd's work sparkles with funky R&B flavors and early hip-hop influences. With a message of black empowerment, Byrd created slick, catchy songs like “Black is So Beautiful” and “Shining Black Prince” that featured him delivering spoken-word raps over the music a la Gil Scott-Heron and The Last Poets. Record collectors and hip-hop heads will also recognize the two-part track “Soul Traveling,” an ode to Byrd's contemporaries like Curtis Mayfield and Al Green, which was famously sam- pled by Large Professor for Nas' debut single “Halftime” in 1992.
From Get On Down (Buy)

CD Re-Issue Review:
A wicked lost album of righteous funk and poetic knowledge from the great Gary Byrd! Gary began his life as a soul DJ in New York, but by the early 70s, he was using his rich voice to create recordings designed to educate as much as entertain. That said, the album is as funky as it is strident, and innovatively soulful – it's got raw and heavy drums and horns the burst in, but there's also roomier, slinkier grooves created to frame Byrd's voice and mood. The arrangements are by Chico O'Farrill and he really delivers. Gary Byrd's storytelling and spoken delivery leads the way, though – righteousness without bitterness, angry yet agreeable – truly brilliant and unique work! Titles include "To You Beautiful Black Sister", "If The People Only Knew (Power To The People)", "Shining Black Prince", "Country Preacher", and "How Long My People" and more. This great 2011 CD edition from Get On Down includes the bonus "Soul Travelin' Pt I (The GBE)" and "Soul Travelin' Pt I (The GBE)".

''Black Is So Beautiful''

Biography:
Imhotep Gary Byrd
Award-Winning Radio Broadcaster | Poet & Songwriter | Executive Producer

Imhotep Gary Byrd is the award-winning host, creator, and executive producer of The GBE, the longest running Black radio broadcast in the history of New York City. His career as a multi-media radio personality, spoken word-recording artist, songwriter, and motivational speaker has always focused on “raising human consciousness thru communications.” In a career that spans over 40 years, Byrd, as a modern day griot, is dedicated to “telling our story and lifting every voice.”
Imhotep has received numerous awards and honors. Among them are the prestigious Hal Jackson Award from the International Association of African American Music and the Living Legend Award from the Living Legend Foundation. He has also been inducted into the National Black Sports and Entertainment Hall of Fame, along with the legendary Frankie “Hollywood” Crocker and Byrd’s brilliant musical collaborator, Stevie Wonder. Most recently, Imhotep was named as a Black Media Legend for McDonald’s Faces of Black History 2011 Tribute.Imhotep was also honored at the New Federal Theatre’s 40th Anniversary Gala, along with Mayor David Dinkins,Sidney Poitier,Ruby Dee,Amiri Baraka,Ntozake Shange,Alicia Keys,George Faison,Terrie Williams and others as “individuals who changed the cultural life of America”.

Background in Radio/Media
Hank Cameron, a teacher and broadcaster in Buffalo, saw a young Byrd acting in a local play and gave Byrd his first break in radio. As a teenager in the 1960’s, Byrd worked at WUFO-AM, the city’s first Black-oriented radio station (home of radio legends Eddie Ojay, Frankie Crocker, and Gerry Bledsoe). From there he became the first African American in Buffalo to broadcast on a general market mainstream station (WYSL AM/FM Radio).
In 1969, Byrd followed his mentors and went to the top Black radio station of the day: WWRL-AM in New York City. Still a teenager, Byrd became the youngest Black radio personality to work in New York City. There, in the media capital of the world, Byrd launched The GBE (The Gary Byrd Experience). The GBE innovative all-night format was both revolutionary and extremely popular and it catapulted Byrd into the public spotlight and cemented his position amongst media pioneers.
Beyond radio, Byrd has numerous accomplishments in television as well. Off camera, he was the announcer for PBS’ groundbreaking all Black variety show, SOUL! and he was voiceover specialist for Max Trax on Cinemax. In front of the camera, Byrd co-hosted Essence: The TV Show with Susan L Taylor. He has also had several feature appearances or guest performances on various television programs in the states and in the UK.
Byrd was invited to Inner City Broadcasting’s WLIB-AM by the late Chairman Emeritus Percy Sutton. At WLIB-AM, Byrd transformed The GBE into The Global Black Experience. From there he broadcasted live from the Apollo Theatre and became even more respected in his field. The extent of his popularity was evidenced in the 1992 birthday tribute to Imhotep at The Apollo. It was standing-room-only.

The Wonder-Byrd Connection
Imhotep and Stevie Wonder have collaborated on several songs that have stood the test of time. Village Ghetto Land is one of the five classics that they collaborated on and it’s from the 1976 multi-platinum album Songs in the Key of Life (Songs). Pop superstar George Michaels performed Village Ghetto Land at Nelson Mandela’s 70th Birthday Celebration, garnering a worldwide audience of over 600 million people in nearly 70 countries. At this event, Wonder also performed Dark n Lovely, an anti-apartheid theme song from the Characters CD, written by Wonder-Byrd. The duo also co-wrote Black Man, also from Songs. At the 40th Annual NAACP Image Awards, this bi-centennial tribute song was performed by Stevie Wonder, with an added tribute to the newly elected President of the United States, Barack Obama. Michael Jackson said in Jet magazine: “Black Man is my favorite song.”
Songs is named by Rolling Stone Magazine as one of the “500 Greatest Albums of All Time.” A documentary DVD about Songs was created based on VH1’s Classic Albums programs. Byrd’s commentary is featured throughout, offering an insider’s narrative which threads the story together.
Other Wonder-Byrd collaborations include Misrepresented People for the opening score on Spike Lee’s feature film Bamboozled (Byrd also appears as himself in the film, interviewing the star of the film, Damon Wayans); and The Crown, a 10-minute spoken-word motivational rap classic celebrating African history and culture. The Crown (performed by Imhotep & The GBExperience), became a top five record on the pop charts in the UK and a smash hit throughout Europe in the 80’s. To date, The Crown is the only record released on Stevie’s Motown-Wondirection Records.

Spoken Word-Recording Artist; Songwriter
Imhotep Gary Byrd has always been an innovator in the spoken word/rap genre. He has numerous recordings as a spoken word poet on Real Thing, RCA, and Motown Records. As a songwriter, Imhotep has over 30 published songs. His first recording was the classic Every Brother Ain’t A Brother, followed by his first album of spoken-word poetry Presenting The Gary Byrd Experience. Are You Really Ready For Black Power? was the back side of Every Brother and was released in the UK on a compilation called Stand Up & Be Counted featuring Nikki Giovanni and the legendary James Brown. The Godfather of Soul was a friend and fan of Imhotep and dedicated his song Mindpower to that “young man up in New York with the GBE.”
As a recording artist, Byrd also recorded Soul Travelin’ backed by the Jimmy Castor Band, with producer and funk legend Jimmy Castor. Soul Travelin has been sampled by various including Jazzy B (of Soul II Soul) and Nas. A strong advocate and supporter of the independent artist movement, Imhotep Gary Byrd produced his last CD Words of Power from Planet Africa on his own label.
Byrd has also enjoyed consistent success oversees. He hosted the American Chart Countdown Show on the BBC, which was broadcast by satellite in New York and England over BBC Radio One. He also hosted a gospel radio show: Gary Byrd presents Sweet Inspirations, a live weekly trans-Atlantic broadcast from New York to England. The show spawned a compilation album by the same name which was released on BBC Records.

''To You Beautiful Black Sister''

Gary Byrd has been a controversial figure as a radio talk-show host in the '80s and '90s, appearing weekdays on radio station WLIB in New York City, one of several outlets owned by African-American businessman Percy Sutton's Inner City Broadcasting corporation. Byrd's musical roots extend to the '60s, when he met Stevie Wonder and wrote the lyrics for his songs "Black Man" and "Village Ghetto Land." He and Wonder teamed again in 1983, when Byrd co-wrote the historical/inspirational tune "The Crown," which was issued as a 12-inch on Wonder's Wondirection label. Wonder co-wrote the number, and also produced and sang on it. Byrd was a disc jockey in England during 1984, hosting a gospel radio program Sundays on the BBC titled "Sweet Inspiration." He wrote a poem about Halley's Comet for a European Space Agency broadcast, and later did oral narratives for syndication that were short portraits of African-American heroes.

Reviews:
By Jason Ankeny (AMG):
The final Young-Holt Unlimited album captures their seamless transition into a new era of Chicago soul heralded by Curtis Mayfield's landmark Superfly score. A skilled and deeply funky interpretation of the emerging blaxploitation sound that sacrifices none of the group's signature groove, Plays Super Fly is the rare cash-in record with integrity and invention to spare. Only half of the album reprises Superfly material, most notably a percolating rendition of "Freddie's Dead" -- the remainder of the set casts Y-HU in dramatically different directions, including the loping original "Hey Pancho," a sweet but never saccharine cover of "Could It Be I'm Falling in Love" and a mind-boggling rendition of "Close to You" spotlighting Ken Chaney's future-forward electric piano.

Young and Holt lay down grooves from Curtis Mayfield's Superfly soundtrack ion this Paula records release (and all the good ones too -- like "Freddie's Dead", "Give Me Your Love", "Pusher Man", and "Superfly"), and they also get into some funky tracks of their own (like "Hey Pancho" and "Mystical Man"), and do a tight cover of "People Make the World Go Round" that was used by Compton's Most Wanted for "Raised in Compton"
The album's nice and stripped down -- perhaps closest to their Oh Girl LP on Atlantic... in feel, with loads of cool electric piano by Ken Chaney, laid out over the group's harder funky grooves!

Young-Holt Unlimited – Plays Super Fly - back

''Freddie's Dead''

Biography by Steve Huey (AMG):
Bassist Eldee Young and drummer Isaac "Red" Holt attended the American Conversatory of Music in Chicago together, and played together in a dance orchestra called the Cleffs, where they met pianist Ramsey Lewis and formed a popular jazz trio in 1956. After a decade as Lewis' rhythm section, Young and Holt split to form their own act in the wake of the trio's breakout pop hit "The 'In' Crowd." Hiring pianist Hysear Don Walker and christening themselves the Young-Holt Trio, they scored a quick Top 20 R&B hit with the infectious and silly "Wack Wack." Most of their material, recorded on several LPs for Brunswick, cut an invigorating soul-jazz groove that explored the territory between Jimmy Smith and Junior Walker, with dour bass, Ray Charles-inspired keyboards, faint scat vocals, and a live party ambience. In 1968, Walker was replaced by Ken Chaney as Young and Holt tightened up their sound, added some funky rhythms, and renamed the group Young-Holt Unlimited. They scored a left-field smash with the instrumental "Soulful Strut," which was actually the backing track from Brunswick soul singer Barbara Acklin's "Am I the Same Girl." Although the actual Young-Holt group was rumored not to have even played on the track, it went all the way to number three in 1969, driven by a bright, indelible horn riff. Attempts to duplicate its success met with indifference, and although Young-Holt Unlimited remained a popular concert attraction on both the R&B and jazz circuits (sometimes with pianist Bobby Lyle in place of Chaney), their recording career was on the wane. They cut LPs for Atlantic (1972's Oh Girl) and Paula (1973's Plays Superfly) that failed to restore their commercial momentum, and disbanded in 1974. Both Young and Holt reunited with Ramsey Lewis in 1983.

Old School Hip Hop: 3rd Bass' The Cactus Album (1989)

 3rd-base
3rd Bass

Members: Michael Berrin (pka MC Serch), Peter Nash (pka Prime Minister Pete Nice), Rich Lawson (pka DJ Richie Rich or Daddy Rich)
3rd Bass was formed in 1987 in Queens, NY, United States, and disbanded in 1992 after releasing two full length albums (1989's "The Cactus Album" and 1991's "Derelicts Of Dialect") and a handful of memorable singles.
Notably, 3rd Bass gave time on early wax to two eventual legends: Zev Love X (later known as the great MF Doom) from KMD first appeared on "The Gas Face" in 1989, and Nas's second studio appearance was on the MC Serch song "Back To The Grill" in 1992.

Text on back cover:
The cactus stands firm on the desert plain, juicing fluids from its desolate environment. Two solo MC's absorbed and deciphered culture from far rockaway to Bedford-Stuyvesant and, like the desert plant, stood alone. Predators never set it off, for all over sharp thorns protrude. Step... and your mack-daddy license is revoked. All shades knowlegde cactus techniques, and jet from ignorance in the desert.

3rd Bass - The Cactus Album label 1

''Brooklyn Queens''

''The Gas Face''

Comments & Reviews:
The Cactus Album, also known as The Cactus Cee/D, was the debut album by hip-hop trio 3rd Bass, released on Def Jam Recordings on October 23, 1989. The album received positive reviews from the hip hop press, and the group gained some publicity by being arguably the second white group to achieve hip hop credibility, after the Beastie Boys.
The Cactus Album peaked at #5 on Billboard's Top Hip Hop/R&B Albums chart and at #55 on the Billboard 200 chart. In 1998, the album was selected as one of The Source's 100 Best Rap Albums. A decade later, Rhapsody (online music service) included The Cactus Album in its list of "The 10 Best Albums By White Rappers".
Most of the music was produced by Sam Sever alongside members MC Serch and Pete Nice, except for the Prince Paul-produced tracks "The Gas Face" and "Brooklyn-Queens," and "Steppin' to the A.M." and "Oval Office" by The Bomb Squad. The album generally features songs that are lyrical showcases or are about women (such as the hidden sexual meaning of "Oval Office"). The song "Sons of 3rd Bass" can be viewed as a diss to the Beastie Boys (who had recently severed ties with 3rd Bass' record label, Def Jam) in that it references them in many lines such as this one uttered by MC Serch in the first verse.
Swarm to the lyrics cause Serch is your father
Screaming "Hey Ladies", why bother?
The song "Wordz of Wisdom" was recorded while the group performed under the name "Three the Hard Way." Their name was changed after they signed to Def Jam, however, the recording made its way onto the album.
The group had a minor hit with the single "The Gas Face". The accompanying video, which featured a bevy of humorous cameo appearances that included Gilbert Gottfried, Flavor Flav, Salt-n-Pepa, and Erick Sermon, garnered respectable MTV airplay. The song also features Daniel Dumile in his recording debut. At the time, he was recording under the alias Zev Love X, a member of the rap duo KMD, but would later come to be known as MF DOOM. KMD were mentioned several times on the album, and they appeared in the music videos for "The Gas Face" and Steppin' to the A.M."

''Steppin' To The A.M.''

Besides the upper-middle-class frat-punks-in-rap-clothing shtick of the Beastie Boys and emissary/producer Rick Rubin, who both gained a legitimate, earned respect in the rap community, there were very few white kids in rap's first decade who spoke the poetry of the street with compassion and veneration for the form. That is, until The Cactus Album. Matching MC Serch's bombastic, goofy good nature and Prime Minister Pete Nice's gritty, English-trained wordsmithery (sounding like a young Don in training), 3rd Bass' debut album is revelatory in its way. For one, it is full of great songs, alternately upbeat rollers ("Sons of 3rd Bass"), casual-but-sincere disses ("The Gas Face"), razor-sharp street didacticism ("Triple Stage Darkness," "Wordz of Wizdom"), and sweaty city anthems ("Brooklyn Queens," "Steppin' to the A.M.," odes to day and night, respectively), with A-plus production by heavyweights Prince Paul and Bomb Squad, as well as the surprising, overshadowing work of Sam Sever. The duo may not have come from the streets, but their hearts were there, and it shows. The album embodies New York life. Not every single idea plays out successfully -- Serch's Louis Armstrong impression on "Flippin' Off the Wall..." is on the wrong side of the taste line, and "Desert Boots" is a puzzling Western-themed insertion -- but they are at least interesting stretches that add to the dense, layered texture of the album. The Cactus Album was also important because it proved to the hip-hop heads that white kids could play along without appropriating or bastardizing the culture. It may not have completely integrated rap, but it was a precursor to a culture that became more inclusive and widespread after its arrival.

Record Of The Week: Skeewiff - I Go So

skeewiff

Skeewiff

''I Go So''

Real Name:Alessandro Pasquale Rizzo & Elliot Greenway Ireland
Skeewiff are a funky breaks act started by Producer Alex and DJ Elliot back in 1998. They signed their first deal with Ministry of sound label FSUK the following year and immediately released a number collectable esoteric EPs. Records like AWOL and Quattro stagioni are still to be found in record boxes worldwide...virtual and physical!
Following two succesful years with FSUK, Skeewiff went on to form their own independent label, Jalapeno Records, which has now released over 100 records and which continues to spread the uber-funk today. The ball started rolling with "the label wont touch this" EP, and album releases of Its all gone. A further 10 Eps and singles and albums Cruise Control Private Funktion were to follow.
Clearly not satisfied with this, Al & El decided to start yet another label - Pedigree Cuts: & this time in the ethers of the digital cloud... Skeewiff's new home was born.
In 2012 Skeewiff were voted best Electro-Swing Producer of the year award.

Lonnie Smith Keep On Lovin_2

''No Tears Tomorrow''

Reviews:
Lonnie Smith embraces fusion for Keep on Lovin’, forsaking his signature Hammond B-3 for the Fender Rhodes–although the record veers close to mainstream R&B by virtually any metric, drawing obvious inspiration from Stevie Wonder classics like Innervisions, it’s a natural progression for Smith and a solid addition to his discography. Paired with arranger Brad Baker (of jazz-funk cult icons B. Baker’s Chocolate Company), Smith even assumes vocal chores on a handful of tracks, furthering the Stevie comparisons–purists will no doubt cry foul, but in truth the record’s electric sheen isn’t so far removed from his Blue Note heyday, and the energy and creativity of his playing demands respect regardless of context.
By Jason Ankeny (AMG)

Lonnie Smith's a long way from his Blue Note years here – but the sound is still plenty darn great, thanks to some fuller arrangements from the great Brad Baker – of B Baker Chocolate Company fame! The whole thing's quite electric – with Lonnie on Fender Rhodes and other keyboards on most tracks, and rhythms that bring in bits of strings amidst the smaller jazz combo vamping – a blend that's smoothly soulful, but still more than funky enough to please our ears. Lonnie even sings a bit on the record, too – in this slightly-spacey quality that has echoes of Stevie Wonder – but the main focus overall is on his keyboards, which step out nicely over the backings. Titles include "Keep On Lovin", "What I Want", "No Tears Tomorrow", "Sizzle Stick", "Lean Meat", and "Filet O Sole".
